Aila Snickars, Artist (1939-2024)

" My colorful work evokes a modernist spirit and technique while also paying homage to the simple lines and forms of ancient figurative art"

Finnish artist Aila Snickars had a fondness for large and colorful compositions that attempted to eliminate superfluous details to get at the essence of what she was depicting. This can most strongly be seen in her figurative work; she created strong yet minimal lines to hint at the motion and elicit her subject's emotions while letting the vibrant washes of color envelop the composition.

Originally from Kotka, Finland, Aila lived and worked in Stockholm, Sweden. Her interest in the arts began as a teenager painting porcelains, but she quickly found her passion in oil paintings. To further enhance her natural talent she attended multiple art schools and work shops, including Huttunen's art academy in Kotka and Tore Hultctrantz and Erik Springfeldt's art school in Italy. She described her work as an interpretation of the feelings and questions that each of us experience throughout our lives and was influenced by both Expressionist and Impressionist movements. She predominantly created using acrylics and watercolors on canvas, with a passion for big oil paintings.

In addition to being an artist, Aila was also an art teacher, having started her own art school in Stockholm and taught multiple art classes specifically for oil painting in the Stockholm area, as well as abroad including Greece, Turkey, Italy, Bulgaria and the USA. She was named Artist of the Year 2004 by Suomi Art, the association of Finnish artists in Sweden, won the culture award in Finland and was awarded best artist in Arlanda Airports magazine.

Her paintings were featured in multiple exhibitions internationally including; Sweden, Finland, Greece,  Austria (Vienna), France (Carousel du Louvre Paris & Cannes Film Festival) and in the US (Agora Gallery NYC).
